Dropping heavily into a plastic chair that felt like heaven, I flopped my head back and stretched my aching legs with a loud groan. I didn’t regret doing a double on Black Friday, but I acknowledged that I never wanted to endure this torture again. Everything was fine until I was moved to the back, and Jennifer couldn’t have been more right.
Packing was truly a baptism of fire, and I never, ever, ever wanted to step foot in the warehouse for as long as I lived.
“You alright?” I could hear the smile in Jennifer’s voice as she pulled up a chair in front of me, and I lifted my head as that painful tingle of near numbness spread up from my toes. She’d gone home after her shift, but her replacement was half an hour late, and I scanned her as she rested her chin on her forearms on the back of the chair. “How was it- bad?”
“I didn’t know standing in place, furiously closing boxes for three hours was going to be what did me in.” She laughed at my plight, and I sat up a little as exhaustion filled my arms with lead. “It wasn’t bad. I’d just never done it before, and there’s so many online orders… Why are there so many online orders?”
“I was worried about you when I left, so I bought you this.” Producing a cinnamon spice latte from beside her, Jennifer grinned when I snatched it in a sudden burst of energy, and I licked my lips hungrily. “It’s decaffeinated, since I thought you’d want to go home and sleep. I told the lady to only use enough coffee to taste, but the rest is cream and chocolate.”
“You’re an angel.” Mumbling around the straw, I sucked up the delicious, cold brew, and Jennifer flipped her hair over her shoulder absently. The zing of spice warmed my chest, the chocolate danced on my tongue- it was just a perfect way to end an overwhelming day. “Thank you. I appreciate it.”
“No problem at all. I got coffee, myself, but… um- so, about that guy that came to pick you up for your break?” Jennifer’s none-too-subtle conversation shift earned her an arched brow, and I arched a brow quizzically. “How’d you two meet? Did you go to one of his frat’s parties?”
“Uh- sorta. This girl pushed me down the stairs outside one of the lecture halls, and he happened to be walking by, so he stopped me from dying. Pretty poetic, honestly.” Jennifer’s manicured brows rose high, and I took another large sip of my drink before sighing in reminisce. “That’s how I sprained my wrist and ankle, remember? Michael’s a little rough around the edges, but I think he’s a nice guy.”
“I remember. He’s hot- whew-” Fanning herself dramatically, Jennifer smirked as a giggle escaped me, and I leaned forward to prop my elbows on my knees. Twirling my cup in my palms, I let the cold and perspiration from the plastic cup help ease the burning in my hands and up my arms.
